February is Cherry Month

February is National Cherry Month! Seems strange that a winter month would get such notoriety from a summer fruit, so I went to the internet to find out why…

Different sources have different theories, but the primary one seems that National Cherry Month is associated with the month of February because George Washington’s birthday is celebrated in February. He, of course, is known for the famous phrase “I cannot tell a lie father, it was I who cut down the cherry tree.” So cherries are forever associated with the ex-president and February is as good a month as any to celebrate this delicious fruit.

My bakery trend blog for 2013 certainly missed the Cronut (half croissant, half donut), so I had to include it as a prelude for this year! Here’s my list of trends that are hot in the bakery world for 2014:

Fudge even grandma will be proud of

Between parties, kid’s events, work, and shopping, there’s only a little time left to make those traditional Christmas goodies you remember from the past. I can handle baking a few cookies and assembling the gingerbread house with the kids, but when it comes to finding a candy thermometer and determining what’s a soft-ball or a hard-crack or thread, that’s where my expertise (and patience) comes to an end.

I’m sorry Grandma – I can’t make fudge from scratch!

Instead, I know just the place to find fudge that’s been lovingly made in a variety of scrumptious flavors - Lunds and Byerly’s.

Fall is the bakery’s time to shine! We have such a fantastic variety of apple products and as we dive deeper into the season, we turn to pumpkin!

Did you know that pumpkin is rich in dietary fiber, anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins? It’s a local vegetable grown in many Midwest fields and provides a rich sweet flavor to many of our bakery treats.

Doussants are here!

The absolute hottest trend in the bakery world this year is the Cronut™. This tasty treat is a cross between a croissant and a donut and we officially have them in our bakeries!

After many taste tests and revisions (I know, I have such a tough job some days) we’ve got our very own take on the Cronut…

Introducing the Lunds and Byerly’s Doussant!
Pronounced dough-SAHNT, it looks almost like a raised glazed donut, but when you take a bite you’ll see the layers and layers of croissant dough as it oozes with Bavarian cream. It’s a rich concoction of pure deliciousness!
